General Description of Activity

A spontaneous performance art activity, this can be done without any rehearsal or much planning. You can perform a machine anywhere there are people to watch...the mall, the lunchroom, a sporting event, a party. All you need is at least two out-going people and a message.

Here's how you do it

Select a brief message, and break it down into small key phrases to chant. Each person in your machine yells out his or her part, while also adding some type of physical action to it.

Some key messages to consider are

  • 1 in 5 West Virginians will die from tobacco.
  • Big Tobacco Kills.
  • Tear Down the Lies of Big Tobacco.
  • Big Tobacco Lies.

After you select your message, think of some body language or motions that will illustrate your point. For example:

  • Big - As you yell "Big", move your arms in a huge circle.
  • Tobacco - As you yell "tobacco", pretend you are smoking a cigarette.
  • Kills - As you yell "kills", you can drop to the ground, and pretend you've died.

Desired Outcome of Activity

  • Create anti-tobacco messages that will be seen by your audience.
  • Increase awareness of Raze brand, the manipulation by Big Tobacco, and the dangers of tobacco use.

Estimated Number of Teen Activists Needed

2-4

Since this is a Mini-Commotion, you don't have to follow the Do It in 5 steps. However, remember, you are representing Raze. Don't be vulgar or rude. And...if anyone asks you to stop or leave, simply reply, "Sure. No Problem."
